History of Braintree, Essex and the Town’s Kelloggs Cornflakes Connection
Here in the historical town of Braintree, Essex and an associated nearby village called great Leigh’s is an interesting historical and genealogical connection to a famous household brand we all know as Kelloggs This is where the Kellogg’s family came from, before they left our shores and sailed to the New World – eventually conquering the world with their Kellogg’s cornflakes. Off cause there is a sinister twist to Cornflakes and I will discuss that shortly. Firstly, let’s take a look at the Cornflake family tree. The Kellogg’s brand was founded by William Keith Kellogg who was the 5th great-grandson of Martyn Kellogg of Braintree and Great Leighs. Martyn Kellogg of Braintree was not only the ancestral father of Kellogg’s but he is also the 8th great-grandfather of the actor John Wayne, the 9th great-grandfather of actress Raquel Welch, the 9th great-grandfather of Clint Eastwood and the 10th great-grandfather of actress Jodie Foster. So this local, historical Braintree figure has some incredible connections not only as a household name but also connected through blood to some incredible names in Hollywood. I have a family connection myself with the Kellogg’s family – Martin Kellogg who was born in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts in 1658 and died in 1732 was the grandson of Martin Kellogg the elder who was born in Great Leigh’s, Essex on the 15th November 1595 and died on the 20 May 1671 here in Braintree, Essex, England. Martin Kellogg Junior was the husband of Anna Hinsdale who was born in 1665 and Anna was my 7th cousin, 8x removed.
