THE SCIENCE MUSEUM – LONDON – Virtual Museum Tour / History Walk

The Science Museum is located along Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London. It was founded in 1857 and today attracts more than 3.3 million visitors annually. Join Stephen and Yhana on a virtual history walk of the Science Museum, London The museum was founded by Bennet Woodcroft from a collection of the Royal Society of Arts and surplus items from the Great Exhibition. the Great Exhibition or the Crystal Palace Exhibition was temporary structure and an international exhibition which took place in Hyde Park, London, from 1 May to 15 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World’s Fairs, exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century. The Great Exhibition was organised by Henry Cole and by Prince Albert, husband of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, Queen Victoria. The science Museums connection to the Great Exhibition of 1851 is something I find very exciting as I have a personal genealogical interest to this 1851 event. My 4x great grandfather William Plaskett showcased his new patent live at the Great Exhibition – a water tight chronometer in which he made for the Admiralty. Today his chronometers sell for lots of money and interestingly many of the victorian exhibits on show that were present at the 1851 exhibition my 4x great-grandfather William Plaskett would have seen also with his own two eyes. The first gallery that we are exploring here at the Science Museum in London is the Exploring Space room.
