The Jericho Tomb | British Museum London | Bronze Age Burial

On display at the British Museum in London is a wonderful reconstructed tomb dating back to the Middle Bronze Age period. The tomb is important on a biblical scale as the city of Jericho is mentioned in the Bible – This reconstructed exhibit is from a tomb of seven people, six of whom died at the same time, perhaps in a raid or due to a family feud.  It is from Jericho, most famous for being the home city of Rahab, who with her family, were the only survivors of the destruction of the city by Joshua and his army. Jericho is said to be the oldest city in the world.   These excavations in Jericho were undertaken by archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon. On behalf of the British school of archeology in Jerusalem between 1952 and 1958. The excavation uncovered many tombs in the area to the north of the city mound. These were shaft tombs in which a vertical shaft gave way to an underground burial chamber. The tombs date from the middle bronze age and they are particularly impressive because many of them as a result of environmental conditions, had preserved organic materials, Wood, leather, textiles and even human flesh. The remaining displays throughout this gallery showcases wonderful displays of the archeology discovered throughout this incredible region.
