300,000 Years Old – Fossil Hunting | Rock Hounding | Mersea Island, Essex
More Than 300,000 Years Ago, The River Thames Flowed Through Mersea Island, leaving behind deposits of London Clay. Above that London Clay Red Crag and Gravel began to build up over the top of it burying within its layers – fossils from extinct animals that once called England Home. They include Ancient Oysters, Petrified Wood and lots more. Over the years, monkey, hippopotamus, shark and mammoth fossils have all been found buried in the deposits of gravel and red crag here on Mersea. In this video, I explore East Mersea Island, Essex in search of some of those fossils and whilst I am here a little Rock Hounding too. I was surprised about what rocks can actually be found here, including Yellow Jasper and Carnelian Agate.
