TOWER HILL, LONDON – Execution Site | Sir John de Vere | Virtual History Walk

Tower Hill is the location of the infamous Execution site – a prominent hill set high above the Tower of London known as Great Tower Hill Although most of the executions recorded for Tower Hill were beheadings, this was not the only way of dispatching the condemned that was employed there. Tower Hill was for a long time a place where public punishments were carried out. The earliest recorded in 1381 and the final taking place in 1747 Today a memorial has been put in place on the location where the executions took place and its close to the WW2 memorial to Merchant Seamen. Yhana and I are going to be visiting both of these locations in this video. Great Tower Hill was used for executions of important people. The approximate location of the scaffold is shown on various old maps and plans of Tower Hill – As shown here in this image. The manner of execution depended on the status of the victim. Beheading was considered the least brutal method – though didn’t always turn out that way with several accounts of botched executions. Welcome to our new Virtual History Walk of Tower Hill, London.
