So how does Tilbury Fort play a role in the Jacobite Rebellion? Well the connection is very dark and associated with the imprisonment, death and execution of many Jacobite prisoners. Today, a Culloden memorial stone can be found on the site, an actual stone brought to London from the bloody battlefield of Culloden, Culloden being the last stand of the Jacobite cause and the last battle ever fought on English soil. It was unveiled on the 16th July 1998 and reads In memory of the Scottish prisoners from the battle of Culloden in April 1746 who died either on the Thames prison ships or within Tilbury Fort. The history of the Jacobites is something that intrigues me a lot, as my 7th great grandfather James Gordon Esquire of Cobairdy, Aberdeenshire was a Jacobite himself and a close friend of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The young Prince Charlie even gifted James Gordon a gold/silver pocket watch chain. The item has since been returned to the Royal collection and on display at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. #tilburyfort #jacobite #culloden
